Neurosurgeon Appointment

Thursday, August 21, 2008

Cayman saw her Neurosurgeon today. It's hard to believe it's been 6 weeks already! Her hydrocephalus is stabilizing so well that we do not need to return for another 6 weeks. Dr. Maher is pleased with the decrease in Cayman's head size. It measured 46.5 cm. Even with the loss of fluid from her head the scale showed she has still gained weight. She now weighs 12 lb. 14 oz. Cayman had a head ultrasound done today too. She was much less dramatic this time and much more cooperative than last time. Her brain has continued to increase as the fluid decreases. Yay!! It's an amazing feeling. Our experience of ultrasounds from the pregnancy left me dreading these kind of appointments. It's been refreshing and somewhat healing to see positive results be delivered from an ultrasound.

Here is Cayman with her Neurosurgeon, Dr. Maher. We love him! He has the right amount of compassion and empathy without letting that cloud his medical judgments. That is wonderful to find in a doctor.

Can I tell you that I had the most AWESOME (well michelle did) Neurosurgeon when we lived in Washington. If he hadn't deployed than we would still be there. I could't get comfortable with the rest of the staff at the hospital so we opted to move. We made a good decision but I still miss him. I can remember him coming from the OR into the waiting room and saying that it was going to be touch and go until the infection cleared. Never had I seen a doctor with tears in his eyes. Michelle had touched him more so than most. IDK why but we still keep in touch and he still contacts her Neurosurgeons at Children's once a month! He is truely a great man! When you can find a doctor like that hang on to them for as long as possible. I love her Neurosurgeons now but Dr. Melton will always be that one who is the best!

Yay for Cayman for making progress! I am proud of her! Some advice I have for you and Mike.... Take what they say with a grain of salt.. You know your child.. You know she is a fighter and will continue to fight. Cayman is a strong willed little girl who has shown the world more than what most ever expected out of her! I just hope that she will continue to improve!

I think the Dr. would look a lot cooler if he didn't have the big M on his jacket! haha. But it's so great to hear that Cayman's brain is getting bigger!! YAY!

I hear your doctor is amazing. When I first learned from a friend about Cayman, our family has followed since. My son has had a form of Hydrocephaly as well and our neurosurgeon, Dr. Boaz in Indianapolis speaks very highly of Cayman's neurosurgeon.
