Out of Surgery

Cayman's surgery went well.

She's back in her hospital room. She drank 4 ounces already and is now working on dozing off.

And I'm happy to announce that she has been officially promoted to the VP shunt club.

The doctor also put in a fixed shunt valve (1.5) instead of a programmable one.

Yippee!

The Pediatric Surgeon went into her abdomen through her belly button with a scope to check out the amount of scar tissue. He was able to break down the existing adhesions and create (in his exact words) "a wide open space".

Now let's pray that it works perfectly!

Oh and the surgery was just early enough that Cayman's regular Neurosurgeon was able to do his part of the operation before he had to leave for the afternoon. We adore his dedication.

Love,

Kristen

  7. I'm happy to hear the surgery went well and that your regular neurosurgeon was able to perform the surgery. I hope that put you at a little more ease, at least a little. I am praying for a quick recovery. What kind of shunt did she have before?

  8. I'm so glad everything went so well! We've been praying! And glad your neurosurgeon was there too!

I hope this nice wide open space will be an awesome place for the shunt to drain...and it would be nice to not have to worry about it being in her heart vessels. Yippee for good news!

  16. What fantastic news! God is so good.
I stumbled on to your blog over the weekend and I am riveted! Your faith is so inspiring! I am a Christian woman with a 6 year old with developmental delay and epilepsy. He also has 2 typical brothers (3 and 18 months). You have inspired me just by reading your blog. Your attitude is remarkable. God knew what he was doing when he gave his precious Cayman to you. Thank you so much for your uplifting posts!

  17. Sounds great....so glad your regular doc was able to do his part....it feels so much better to be able to 'send them off' with the familiar doc....believe me, I can relate....we had so much faith and trust in our doc doing the first 4 surgeries....we always knew that he would take good care of her...we didn't have the same feeling for the last 2 surgeries...and that wasn't a great feeling at all. Prayers going out your way!

  21. Diane,

Cayman had a VA shunt, where the distal end was in a blood vessel surrounding her heart.
